Arizona fires Kevin Sumlin

After a disastrous start to a shortened season, Arizona has fired head football coach Kevin Sumlin. The move follows a horrific 70-7 loss to in-state rival Arizona State. Sumlin was in a pivotal year in leading the program and showed very few signs of improvement.

Arizona was Sumlin's third stop as a college head coach. In 2008, he became the head coach at houston and led the Cougars to a winning record in three out of his four seasons, including a 12-1 season in 2011. That season led him to Texas A&M in 2012. Sumlin would spend six seasons as the Aggies' head coach--having early success-- but ultimately fizzled out.

Sumlin never won more than five games in a season at Arizona and never took the Wildcats to a bowl game. He lasted just 29 games and had a 9-20 record in the desert.

Defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads will be the team's interim head coach. Rhoads was the head coach at Iowa State from 2009 until 2015.
