New Era Pinstripe Bowl
Bowl season continues on Wednesday as Maryland meets Virginia Tech in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. The game will be played at Yankee Stadium and airs at 2:15 ET on ESPN.
Maryland finished 6-6 and near the bottom of the Big Ten East. The Terrapins have good weapons on offense but can be incredibly inconsistent. The team seems to perform as quarterback Tauli Tagovailoa does. When Tagovailoa is on, he is a really good player, but he does tend to make some mistakes that have cost his team.
Rakim Jarrett took over the WR1 role after Dontay Demus was lost for the season, and tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo has provided a great complement with his unique athleticism for the position, Tayon Fleet-Davis is the team's leading rusher.
Virginia Tech also went 6-6 this season and finished in third place in the ACC Coastal Division. Head coach Justin Fuente and the school have decided to part ways and Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry will take over after this game.
The Hokies struggle to score points, which was something Fuente was expected to fix during his tenure. The Va Tech offense averages just 24.8 points per game, which is dangerously low for a college team. Luckily, they are playing a team that gives up 32 points per game.
Quarterback Braxton Burmeister has entered the transfer portal, so the Hokies will have a new QB under center. That's a pretty big loss considering Burmeister was also the second-leading rusher on the team. Raheem Blackshear will have to carry the ground game himself, while Tre Turner and Tayvion Robinson try to take advantage of a suspect Maryland secondary/
Defensively, keep an eye on Dax Hollifield and Amare Barno for Virginia Tech and Nick Cross for Maryland.
These teams are very similar on paper. Both have defenses that have struggled this year and give up similar amounts of yardage and points. Maryland definitely has the advantage offensively, the question will be if the defense can play well enough.'
