NFL Draft Declarations Part 3: Tua’s Decision
The NFL Draft declarations for 2020 continue to pour in ahead of the January 20 underclassmen deadline. Here’s a BIG one: Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa.
Tua announced his decision on Monday afternoon. He has been considered a “generational” talent at the quarterback position, pretty much since he took over in the national championship game his freshman year. There has even been talk about a “Tank for Tua” movement in the NFL.
Many people were surprised he declared because of the serious injury he suffered earlier this season. Before the injury, Tua was the uncontested #1 pick, but now he is probably the #2 quarterback with a healthy injury report. You have to think he expects a healthy report, or he would be returning to school.
Tua’s decision also opens up the trade market in the draft. Joe Burrow is likely the number one pick, but after that is anyone’s guess. Many expect the Redskins to take Chase Young at #2, but they’ve invested heavily in a defensive front that finished 7th in the league in sacks. It is possible they look to trade that pick to a QB needy team. It is also possible the Detroit Lions make a trade at 3. It’s been rumored that they might take Tagovailoa themselves, but they really NEED more talent on defense. If all the medicals check out, Tua will be a top 10 pick at the very least.
