Urban Meyer to the NFL
Urban Meyer is heading to the NFL. The legendary college coach has agreed to become the next head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, replacing Doug Marrone.
In an introductory press conference on Friday, owner Shad Khan mentioned that Meyer stood out early among several candidates while conducting interviews.
Meyer has been a successful college head coach, leading programs like Bowling Green and Utah to respectability and Florida and Ohio State to national championships. He stepped away from his positions at Florida and Ohio State due to health concerns and has been a TV analyst for the past two seasons.
Meyer addressed the health concerns by acknowledging that he is older and cannot be as actively emotional on the sidelines. He also said he felt it was the right time and that he feels he can win in Jacksonville.
College coaches have been a mixed bag when jumping to the NFL. Jimmy Johnson is probably the most successful, while Nick Saban, the greatest college coach of all-time, left the Dolphins to return to college. There are many other cases, but ultimately each on e is different. Meyer is a smart guy and has relationships within the league. Assembling a pro staff and pairing a good GM will be pivotal in his success.
